On This Day - 303rd BG(H) Combat Mission No. 27

Remembering the crews of B-17F 42-29573 [VK-H] "Two Beauts" and B-17F 41-24559 "Ooold Soljer".

Details of the Memorial at Mears Ashby »

On 31st of March 1943, the group flagship "Ooold Soljer" of the 360th Squadron US 8th army air force, on her 18th mission but flying for the first time with a new pilot, was leaving Molesworth airfield and forming the battle group in heavy cloud, described as 10/10ths coverage, before heading towards Rotterdam.

Somewhere in the clouds above Wellingborough "Ooold Soljer" collided with 358th squadron's "Two Beauts", shearing her starboard wing clean off.

Only 5 of the 20 men on board both aircraft survived the crash.

This was the first collision to blight the record of the "Hell's Angels" as the 303rd Bombardment Group were known.

It wouldn't be the last.

Thanks to Tom Jenkins for the information supplied.
