The Government's Communities Secretary has approved the restructuring of local government in Northamptonshire. Read the details »
From 1 April 2021, all the services now provided by the County Council and the Boroughs or Districts will be delivered by a single authority for North Northamptonshire (Kettering, Corby, East Northamptonshire and Wellingborough) and by another for West Northamptonshire (Daventry, Northampton and South Northamptonshire). There will be elections in May 2020 for councilors to set up and run the new administrations.
Rose of the Shires tries to remain neutral about "political issues" but, in accordance with our declared aim to support anything which seeks to make the people of Northamptonshire happier and healthier we are hopeful that the changes will deliver improvements.
Under the new arrangements there will be a new Children’s Trust to deliver children’s social care across the county on behalf of the new councils. We anticipate that the new authorities will also decide to share and administer other services across the whole of the traditional county area. Many non-governmental organisations which identify with the whole of the county will continue to do so. While there will no longer be a Northamptonshire County Council, we expect there will still be many areas where we will still have a sense of "belonging to Northamptonshire".
We expect that in some matters people will focus more on what is happening within their own authority. That trend will be driven by separate funding, oversight and regulation by each of the new councils. In other areas we anticipate that many groups and organisations will seek to enhance a sense of identity with "Historical Northamptonshire".
Rose of the Shires will continue to promote all that is good in and about our whole county, sharing news and information about groups and events of interest to the community. We will aim to keep our followers informed about changes and developments both in the North and the West and across both areas.
