Propably the most famous of our painters is Alfred East. He was born in Kettering in 1844 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1906 he was elected President of the Royal Society of British Artists and, in the same year, published his illustrated "The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour". Four years later, he was knighted by King Edward VII. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1899, having been a regular exhibitor since 1883 and elected to full membership in 1913. In that year, too, the Alfred East Gallery was opened in Kettering, shortly before his death.
